Modus Operandi Wins Two U.S. Air Force Contracts

MELBOURNE, Florida, June 7, 2004 — Modus Operandi, a leading business and information technology solutions company, has been awarded two Phase II Small Business Innovation Research contracts by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York. The contracts will be performed in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing, which will be the initial Air Force user of the resulting technology.

The two contracts, each valued at approximately $750,000, will leverage and extend Modus Operandi's powerful web-based enterprise information integration platform, WAVE. WAVE breaks down barriers to enterprise information, manages knowledge assets, supports team-based collaboration, and delivers critical metrics for decision support and performance management.

The 45th Space Wing provides space launch and range support at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Visibility into all aspects of the spaceport is critical to mission success. Knowledge about operations is fragmented because there are many “silos” of information, which are difficult to integrate into a cohesive whole, and the lack of a big-picture view of the spaceport as an enterprise hampers decision-making. The diversity of organizations involved in launch and range operations significantly increases the need for effective communication and coordination in performing these complex and dynamic activities.

The two contracts will extend WAVE to address these challenges. New capabilities will be added to handle more sophisticated enterprise information architectures and to enable rapid deployment of new applications that leverage enterprise information. A key aspect of WAVE relating to these efforts is its underlying enterprise knowledge model and integration framework that supports real-time access to knowledge from many sources throughout the enterprise.

The first contract, COSMOS: The Spaceport Knowledge Framework, will focus on building a self-documenting “smart model” that links disconnected information silos, and unifies and transforms the data so that it is reusable and available to both application developers and to users.  The second contract, Application Toolkit for Collaborative Environments (ACE), will deploy a web services-enabled knowledge management framework that provides universal access to an integrated view of the enterprise data.

Says Modus Operandi President & CEO Peter Dyson, “As information systems grow in complexity within an enterprise, the challenges of getting the right information when and where it is needed to support teamwork and decision-making also grow exponentially. To meet these challenges, solutions must become more sophisticated, yet be easy to use and provide a measurable return on investment. These two contracts, in conjunction with our existing WAVE product, will help the Air Force – as well as other Modus Operandi customers – achieve these important objectives.”
