Modus Operandi Helps Florida Power & Light Automate Commercial Power Production Management

MELBOURNE, Florida, March 1, 2000 — Modus Operandi, Inc. has completed the initial development and deployment of a Generation Commercial Management (GCM) system for Florida Power & Light (FPL). The purpose of the new GCM system is to help FPL automate the management of power generation across multiple power plants in Florida.

By leveraging its extensive expertise in Java and the standard Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), Modus Operandi developed a system that automates daily negotiations between FPL's planners and their power plants. Modus Operandi also designed the GCM system so it provides an open-service architecture that interfaces with FPL's existing power systems and fits into their CORBA services framework.

According to Modus Operandi Sr. Vice President Dr. Andy Rudmik, "Florida Power & Light is wisely looking to the future, preparing to deliver power efficiently in an era of widespread change and increasing competition in the utilities industry. The system provides more sophisticated power generation management capabilities which will ultimately benefit FPL’s customers through more efficient operation of their facilities."

Under the prior system, managers at FPL planned the power output of its plants by receiving weekly declarations of expected plant capabilities, developing a central plan based on each plant's daily generation capacity, and then conferring and issuing instructions back to each plant by telephone on a daily basis.

According to Modus Operandi Sr. Systems Engineer and GCM Project Manager, Mark Wallace, "This new GCM system provides several advantages in addition to automated management. First, plant capabilities are captured daily instead of weekly, providing finer-grained information. Second, capturing the exchange of power generation information in one place provides an audit trail and the opportunity for analysis, which is very important to FPL. Third, all parties with interest in the information can have it routed to them, keeping them abreast of what’s going on in a way that simply wasn’t possible before."

FPL Production Manager, Pete Holzapfel states, "We're excited about the GCM project. The benefits realized by the project's full deployment will increase efficiency and better position FPL for the competitive challenges we will face in the new millennium.
