Modus Operandi Awarded $730,000 U.S. Army Contract to Develop
Intelligence Analysis Software
JC3-Time contract provides intelligence analysts with improved event reasoning, fusion of multiple data sources, and interoperability.
MELBOURNE, FL, March 29, 2010 – Modus Operandi, a leading software and information integration technology company, has been awarded a $730,000 contract by the U.S. Army to create an innovative software service to enable intelligence analysts to better understand how certain objects and events are related to each other with regards to time and location. The software will employ advanced machine reasoning algorithms to represent, extract and reason over event and temporal (e.g., time) information.
The software service is being developed for the Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC) Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate (I2WD).
The contract, called JC3-Time for its temporal extension of JC3IEDM, or Joint Consultation, Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model, leverages advanced techniques to extract information from natural language texts by automatically processing descriptions of militarily-significant events and their important features from intelligence data. Furthermore, the event descriptions are stored within a semantic model, i.e., ontology, so that machine reasoning algorithms can be applied to generate the implicit event relationships currently requiring human effort.
"This capability will significantly reduce manual processing of intelligence for Army analysts,” said Dr. Richard Hull, chief scientist, Modus Operandi. “Intelligence analysts will more easily be able to determine how various events and objects are connected and will be able to process information from many more sources than they currently can."
The Phase II Small Business Innovative Research contract is sponsored by the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
