Modus Operandi Wins $750,000 Missile Defense Agency Contract to Integrate Unstructured Knowledge with Structured Information
MELBOURNE, Florida, Oct. 13, 2005 - Modus Operandi, a leading software and information integration technology company, has been awarded a two-year, $750,000 contract by the Missile Defense Agency. The contract, entitled Ranger Ontology Life Cycle Management, was awarded under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and will be performed in cooperation with the Air Force's 45th Space Wing as part of its Knowledge Management Initiative (KMI). The main focus for Modus Operandi will be on extending their powerful Enterprise Information Integration platform, Wave, to support unstructured data and to provide life cycle tools that reduce the costs and timeframes for deploying enterprise solutions powered by integrated information.
Says Modus Operandi President and CEO, Peter Dyson, "Less than 20 percent of enterprise knowledge is represented in structured format, such as databases, which are the focus of most enterprise information integration initiatives. Modus Operandi is extending our proven platform for structured information integration to enable our customers to exploit the other 80 percent of their enterprise knowledge. This includes knowledge isolated in text fields and documents, file directories, and the like."
Alan McCutchen, Modus Operandi's VP of Engineering added, "Our solution uses an ontology - which is simply a human understandable model of the knowledge in a domain - to create a unified picture of both structured and unstructured information. For the 45th Space Wing's Knowledge Management Initiative, the ontology will provide an object-oriented domain model of space range resources, business rules, and information sources. It offers a way to access data from multiple sources, facilitate understanding, and enable rapid use by software applications. Management of the Ontology Life Cycle is absolutely critical to the 45th Space Wing's KMI, and with Ranger we are creating a methodology, supported by automated tools, to reduce ontology development effort and lower life cycle support costs for the 45th Space Wing." Modus Operandi will work closely with Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. (KBSI), a team member and subcontractor on the project. KBSI will provide tools and expertise to support ontology creation and management. ”
