Modus Operandi Awarded $730,000 Contract to Develop Technology for Semantic Interoperability of Army C4ISR Systems

    MELBOURNE, Florida, April 18, 2006 – Modus Operandi, a leading software and information integration technology company, has been awarded a two-year $730,000 contract by the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Life Cycle Management Command (C-E LCMC). The contract, entitled SE-Wave Integration Tool Set for Army Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), was awarded under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Modus Operandi will extend their powerful Wave® product to support semantic interoperability of Army C4ISR systems. A key area of innovation is the semantic integration of data from both structured sources such as messages and databases, and unstructured sources such as text and audio. Under the SE-Wave contract, Modus Operandi will use an ontology (model of the data) to add semantic knowledge to C4ISR data, and provide access to the data via the ontology using their Wave product together with the BEA AquaLogic Data Services Platform™ as the underlying data federation engine.
  • According to Stewart Fenick, the Army’s technical representative on the contract, “The initial target application for SE-Wave technology and tools will help the Intelligence and Electronic Warfare (IEW) Division in their ability to maintain Post Production Software Support (PPSS) efforts, specifically relating to the Guardrail Common Sensor (GRCS) intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) system.”

In theory, this represents a major breakthrough in how we build and integrate very large systems. With SE-Wave, Modus Operandi is taking theory to practice, providing the technology and tools that will enable the achievement of the vision of semantic interoperability.”
