Modus Operandi Awarded Navy Contract
to Enhance Intelligence Gathering and Understanding on Submarines

MELBOURNE, FL, Jan. 27, 2009 – Modus Operandi, a leading software and information integration technology company, has been awarded a U.S. Navy contract to sharply improve the processing and understanding of intelligence data pouring into next-generation submarines. The $70,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract--known as Wave System of Systems (Wave SOS)--calls for Modus Operandi to develop a semantic service-oriented fusion framework to integrate submarine sensor data to provide on-board analysts with a quicker understanding of what all the data coming into the system means.

Modus Operandi will leverage its Wave® Exploitation Framework, a semantic enhancement for service-oriented architectures such as the Navy SOA reference implementation, to accelerate the discovery and fusion of relevant multi-source intelligence and submarine sensor data.

To counter advanced threats, the Navy is designing and retrofitting submarines with improved sensors, weapons, and communications systems. Such advancements place stress on submarine system command and control personnel because of increased system complexity and increased quantity of information. Under Wave SOS, Modus Operandi will develop a semantic service-oriented framework to represent and fuse submarine sensor information and provide decision support. With the Wave-SOS technology, the Navy can greatly increase the understanding of sensor data, thereby increasing their ability to identify threats with confidence.

“Our part in supporting the Navy’s requirement is to provide the ‘semantic glue’ needed to fuse multi-source sensor data in a meaningful way, allowing system users to recognize adversarial activities within the context of diverse Navy missions.” said Richard Hull, vice president and chief scientist, Modus Operandi. “The Navy will benefit with improved cognitive processing of sensor information thereby reducing the workload on operators and their commanders.”
