Modus Operandi, Inc. Wins Navy Contract to Develop Virtual Prototyping Environment for Systems Development

MELBOURNE, Florida, July 15, 1998 — Modus Operandi has been awarded a contract by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Dahlgren, Virginia, to develop a Wide Area Prototyping Environment (WAVE), which will enable a team of geographically separated engineers to quickly prototype and evaluate potential system designs. This process will employ an integrated set of remote collaboration, virtual reality, simulation, High Level Architecture (HLA), design, analysis, browsing, impact analysis and management tools.

"WAVE will increase the productivity of distributed project teams, reduce the time to 1st article and lower development costs," states program manager Tod Hagan. "Modus Operandi’s Catalyst development environment will serve as the foundation for this effort. Catalyst provides a state-of-the-art infrastructure for achieving distributed interoperability among diverse software tools. Cost-saving commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and government-off-the-shelf (GOTS) development tools will be added to the suite to provide advanced modeling and virtual prototyping capabilities."

A recent study for the North American Technology and Industrial Base Organization (NATIBO) concluded that the government should "focus future DoD investments in Collaborative Virtual Prototypes (CVP) on integration technologies." By building on Modus Operandi’s proven Catalyst environment, WAVE will provide the infrastructure for integrating CVP technologies, which will help answer questions about behavior, and through analysis, will show whether or not a system could accomplish its intended mission.

Upon successful completion, this effort will lead to follow-on development contracts and provide important benefits to large, complex Navy programs, such as DD21, SC21, CVX, LPD-17, and NSSN.

Additionally, a leading engineering tool vendor has already expressed interest in commercializing WAVE. Additional information about the WAVE effort is available from Tod Hagan, Modus Operandi, Inc., 122 Fourth Ave., Indialantic, FL 32951. Telephone: (321) 984-3370. Fax: (321) 728-3957..
